More Apothecary Supreme concepts

September 9, 2017
A few more new characters and monsters – I’ll let you guess which is which – showing up in the next Apothecary supreme issue.

I’ve been working on planning for a while now, in terms of both visuals and story for Issue 2. I feel like there’s a LOT more I could do in this regard but it may well be at the expense of momentum. Past experience has taught me that it is possible to overplan, with a great deal of pre-production content becoming irrelevant anyway and damaging motivation as production ends up feeling creatively restrictive.

In a nutshell; time to get started proper.

Reworking Model Sheets

August 12, 2017

Been a bit quiet post MCM, however I have been laying groundwork for my next volume behind the scenes.

One area I thought I might highlight are these reworked model sheets for Apothecary Supreme’s central duo of Greta and Burkhard.

My original concepts for the characters were done a long time ago and frankly they haven’t aged well. Burkhard in particular wasn’t initially meant to be a mainstay and thus I drew relatively limited designs with what I now consider unsympathetic features.

The bigger problem arises from the fact I simply didn’t plan out all the details or take account of how the characters would look and move from every angle. As such, volume 1 has some slightly clumsy character evolution across its pages as I explored the designs and found looks that worked. Here, I’ve tried to stay reasonably close to the original look for the characters so they don’t appear too alien in issue two, but simultaneously ironed out inconsistencies and moved towards a more attractive aesthetic rather than the ‘figure it out later’ approach I of issue 1.

To emphasise the difference, I’ve included my original early concepts from years ago (below) to draw attention to what’s changed and what’s stayed the same with these designs. For the most part, I think the improvement is massive and at the very least boasts greater consistency across the various angles. Not to mention; Burkhard’s expressions don’t just include snooty and condescending…

As usual finding time for the comic between the day job is an uphill battle, but the pieces are falling into place nicely for issue 2. All being well my next meaningful update should be soon.

Back from MCM Manchester 2017

July 31, 2017

Well, I guess I’m officially reactivated now.

My first comic con table in a LONG time and while I’m exhausted I really did have a fantastic time. Besides flogging a fair few copies of Apothecary Supreme Issue 1, I talked with a whole bunch of awesome people who had lots of great feedback for me. I’m more motivated than ever now to really hit it out of the park with issue 2! I promise it shall be even more mucky, monstery and weird than its predecessor.

That said I really am knackered courtesy of an extensive journey home and my impending return to the day job so I’ll save my in-depth thoughts for another post. Work on Issue 2 is very much ago-go and I’ll no doubt post up some of the less spoilerific pre-production stuff soon.

My deepest gratitude to everyone who stopped by my table, bought a copy or just had something interesting to say. You all made my day, thank you!

Apothecary Supreme – Issue 1 Cover

June 2, 2017

Coloured in cover and a version with the text/logo. Took a while to get this one right, but it feels like one of the biggest hurdles on the road to print is clear.

As anticipated the snake heads didn’t make the cut thanks to the title (that’ll teach me to think out my compositions more carefully!) but perhaps I’ll work them into the back cover somehow.

Apothecary Supreme Page 32 – Issue END

April 24, 2017

Well there we have it, the final page in this story.

As should hopefully be apparent the intention was always to make something self contained first and foremost, avoiding a frustrating ‘to be continued’ with an unwieldy drawn out narrative. Put simply I wanted to make something I could potentially abandon after issue 1 without feeling like I let down any readership.

That said, I DO want to continue Apothecary Supreme with other episodic stories so there is a touch of open-endedness here that I’m hoping to exploit.

I really need some space from this before I can properly assess how well everything went, but on the face of it I’m fairly pleased with the end result. Much turned out as I hoped while the things that changed from the script were likely better for doing so.

One of the largest changes was that of Burkhard’s character. Originally he was meant to be one shot haughty interloper, but I found myself becoming weirdly attached to him near the end… Probability of him returning? Likely I think.

The BIG problems? Speed – work life interfered A LOT – upload rate and some frankly inconsistent character designs. All things I’m looking to remedy a bit in any follow up I do.

What’s next? Some kind of proper cover for the issue for starters and then some kind of print run might be fun.

What now? A fairly lengthy hiatus I reckon while I gear up for more and try to take things in an even more weird, mucky and monstrous direction…

Thanks for reading y’all!
